Just like any other device, your iPad needs to be updated regularly to ensure that it works properly and is optimized for the best performance. Whether you use your iPad for school, work, or for fun, it is important to ensure you install all updates promptly as failure to do so will definitely impact your experience on the device.
We know that updates are important, but what happens if you attempt to update your iPad, but you can’t? It does happen and if it is happening to you, it is important to determine the reason why and then fix it. Fortunately, the solution to an iPad not updating is usually a simple one and is not necessarily a sign that there is something seriously wrong with the device. However, if you struggle to get your iPad to update, do not hesitate to try the troubleshooting options below and if those don’t work, reach out to an iPad repair professional.
Free Up Storage Space
One of the most common reasons for an iPad not updating is that there is simply not enough storage space on the device. If there is not adequate room, the update will not install and will likely kick back an error message to you.
To fix this problem, you want to navigate to the Settings section on your iPad, tap General, and then click iPad Storage. You can follow any of the provided recommendations to free up storage space.
If you notice that you have a lot of videos or photos taking up space, you can free up room by moving the media over to your iCloud. To do this, you will need to first make sure that iCloud Photo Library is turned on. To do this, simply go to Settings, then Click on Your Name, tap iCloud, and then Photos. You can toggle the on and off feature from here. (Note: you can also free up space by deleting any photos and videos you no longer want or need.)
Failure to Connect to Apple’s Servers
Another reason your iPad may not be updating is because you cannot reach Apple’s servers. You will notice an error message that informs you of this via a note or an error code. If you notice that the message states that the device cannot verify an update or check for an update, it is usually due to an issue on Apple’s end. Simply give it some time and try again later.
Bad Internet Connection
If your iPad update started but does not appear to be making progress or has stopped altogether, this could be due to bad Internet connection. To resolve this issue, make sure you are connected via Wi-Fi and then attempt to restart or re-download the update.
Continuing issues can be further addressed by navigating to your iPad network systems. To do this, click on Settings, General, Reset, Reset Network Settings. Then follow the prompts on the screen.
No Update Available
It is possible that the reason that your iPad is not updating is because your iPad is not due for an update and is operating using the latest software. If this is the case, there is nothing else for you to do on your end.
Still Can’t Get Your iPad to Update?
If you are still struggling to get your iPad to update and none of the above troubleshooting steps worked, it could be something else. You do have the option to reset your iPad to factory settings, but this will erase all your data, so do make sure you take the steps necessary to back your data up.
